Think Congress is powerful? Although national politics often gets the spotlight, the state legislature, consisting of the House and Senate, crafts laws on the issues that directly impact citizens' day-to-day lives. They decide how voting maps are drawn, what your schools teach, whether you have access to healthcare, and so much more.
Gerrymandering—when politicians rig voting maps so their side wins more seats, even if they don't get the most votes—drives extremism and systematically devalues votes for competing parties.
Georgia's maps are gerrymandered. We're stuck with these maps, and the extremism that comes with them, unless we flip the State House.
For 22 years, Republicans have controlled the House, Senate, and Governor. They can craft districts keeping them in power while passing harmful legislation. Ensuring balanced districts enables democracy to thrive and guarantees equal representation for all Georgians.
The Republican legislature is out-of-touch with its constituents. Decades of control have left Georgia ranked 50th in healthcare, 49th for workers, and 37th for children. Georgia's minimum wage—the lowest in the country—has not risen in nearly 30 years. The 6-week abortion ban is opposed by 72% of Georgian voters, a testament to the legislature's failure to represent the people.
Although the legislature has the power to improve the lives of Georgians, Republican leadership has ignored these issues year after year.
Nothing is going to change unless we take action. That means flipping the State House, fighting for a living wage, securing affordable healthcare and housing, and improving the standard of living for children in Georgia.
